I am in generally good health (had a recent physical and all is well) and have recently begun an exercise program which focuses on cardio and strength training. I have been working out 3-4 times a week pretty aggressively on the treadmill for about 45 mins at a time. Almost without fail, after every cardio workout I experience a fairly severe headache which is dulled, but not cured by Ibuprofen. Is it common to experience headaches after intense workouts? Any advice on changes to make to my routine to combat this?

Sherri,

How much water are you drinking throughout your day? How are your nutritional habits?

This can probably be solved with diet.

Give me as much detail as you can.

You should look up Effort Headaches and Exertion Headaches. I get the Effort Headaches which are related to more aerobic workouts than anaerobic ones. I am going to the doctor to get treatment. I have been having these problems for about 4 years, wanted to train for a marathon, but I couldn't stand to run through them. I was scared that it might be worse because I am only 22!

I also get effort headaches--it sounds like exactly what you described here. I'm only 17 but I've had them for a long time (only when i work out of course). some of the websites i looked up said that anti-migrain meds can work or something like NSAIDs. I haven't tried either, but it might be worth a try.

You need to be drinking more water and could possibly not have enough iron in your system
