How do you get rid of bulky thigh muscles and thick calves that give a too-muscley profile? A friend recommended that I don't start strength training until I have slimmed down - is this true?

I've had the same problem with this type of thing, bulky leg muscles all around from when i did sprints for track in high school. to get rid of this you just need to do high rep light weights, and longer distance running, not necessarily holding off on weights altogether.
