carbs make you fat if you over do it...for instance fruits have carbs...but they also have other nutrients....go by the food pyramid...the only thing is to watch portion sizes....a serving size of bread is a one ounce slice, of rice is 1/2 cup cooked, 1/2 cup cooked pasta, 1 medium sized potato, 1/2 cup veggies, 1/2 cup fruits or one medium sized fruit, 1 egg, 1 ounce of cheese, 1 cup of yogurt etc..etc..these are just one serving size of each of the mentioned go according to the pyramid...hope this helps! Your body processes carbs just like it does sugar. So basically when you eat carbs it is like you are eating sugar. |

I have a friend who states that: An individual does not lose weight (mass) by burning calories but can only lose weight by the equivalent weight removed from urinating, fecal removal or sweating(weight of sweat water)? In other words there is no themogenesis or ketoses which actually burns fat calories by converting fat cells to heat energy resulting in weight loss. He states that I cannot lose weight in my sleep unless I urinate, have a BM or sweat during the night. I have noticed I lose as much as 6 pounds in one night without any of the 3 activities happening. |

You can literally breath out fat. On the Atkins diet, your body goes into a state called ketosis which is a state people go into when they are fasting or completely deprived of food. But, the key is: You aren't deprived of food. You're eating full meals, and your body is happy. So, you sort of "trick" your body into going into ketosis by limiting your carbs to 20g a day, thus losing fat mass as fast as if you completely starved yourself! On the Atkins diet, your breath will smell sweeter because of the fat your literally breathing out. It's not a bad smell, in fact, it's quite nice. ;) |

no, atkins is not what you think and you guys are wrong. you only fast with 20 grams of carbs for the first TWO WEEKS. after that you add more carbs including fruits and veggies and many many healthy foods. it's also healthier than being over weight. |

It all about calories. If you want to lose weight take the amount of calories you are eating now and cut them by 1/3. Add in excercise gradually. Watch sugar too,fat free puddings and stuff like that still have lots of sugar. |

carbohydrates, of the 3 macro nutrients (or sources of nutrition that we need a lot of) are the body's primary source of energy. When all is said and done, all carbohydrates break down to sugar. Glucose (blood sugar)/ Fructose (fruit sugar- also the SWEETEST TASING of all sugars) /and Galactose (Found in dairy products). These are called monosaccarides, and are usually refered to as "very simple sugars". With the 3 monosaccarides you can make DIsaccarides, or slightly more complex sugars. Like sucrose (we know it was table sugar- it is made up of one molecule of glucose and one of fructose)/ maltose (2 molecules of glucose)/ and lactose (a molecule of galactose and glucose). I think there may be a few more, but id hav to rip out my biology notes to tell you.... :-p I know thats proably extremely confusing if your new to nutrition sciences, and honestly its not that important if your just looking to lose weight. Carbohydrates are basically the body's primary source of enery. Fat is used to insolate and protect the body, as well as be a secondary energy source (this is why you need to burn more calories than you eat in order to burn fat)- and protein is used to rebuild practically all parts of the body (yes, your skin is made of protein, your hair is made of protien, your nails, EVERYTHING accept for fat. Protien and water make up most of our body's. ANYWAYS The best way to veiw carbohydrates is to NOT cut them out, and NOT eat the WRONG KINDS. when people say "eat a moderate amount of carbohydrates" they're not specefiying which KINDS yes there are lots of kinds- starch (which is completely useless to the body exept in the aspect of getting energy from it) / ciatin (which is found in the cytoskeleton of insects..... i dont think that matters lol! )/ and cellulose which is the FIBER IN FOODS. HOORAY! we hit the jack pot! Fiber is SOOOO important in a diet. Your body has to work hard to digest them (and burns calories as it does so) and in the end the body cant even digest them at all! so it doesnt even count as calories! and most importantly fiber keeps you full. *cellulose is made up of glucose that is so interwoven and comple that the body cant break it down so the moral of te story is: shoudl you have carbohydrates? YES but shoose the RIGHT ones (ones with fiber). Choose wheat flour over white. choose wheat bread over white. and most of all S T A Y A W A Y F R O M S U G A R!!!!! should i reiterate? STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR! it does the body no good. sorry all my info is gumbled. i guess i just startedrambling and couldnt stop :-) hope this clears it up a little |
