Mike--I would hardly say that quitting smoking is an easy thing to do. As with any drug addiction, there are side effects and withdrawal symptoms, and as someone who quit just a month ago, I can say that they are quite difficult to deal with. Nicotine and the many other dangerous addictive chemicals added to most cigarettes are most definately physically addicting, and quitting is a daily struggle that will last a lifetime. I used Wellburtrin, which I believe is a generic version of Zyban, and it greatly reduced my cravings, and helped with my resultant mood swings. I have friends who have had a lot of success with the patch as well. It also helps to have a support network of friends, family and co-workers who not only support your decision to quit, but encourage you not to succomb to temtation on your bad days. I do agree that you need to truly want to quit to actually do so. When cutting down and stopping altogether, you need to constantly remind yourself why you want to stop smoking. I hope this helps anyone who wants to quit---good luck, and remember to take it one day at a time! |
