Quitting smoking is the best present I have ever given myself. I do not believe that smoking cigarettes makes a person bad or stupid or negligent to their children; to say that is ludicrous. I think smoking is a way for people to put up a "smoke screen" when they are nervous or do not wish to deal with negative emotions they encounter. Believe me, it is what I had done for over ten years! So if you happen to smoke, don't buy the bad press nonsmokers hurl your way. You are a person who has acquired a bad habit-- you are not an ax murderer. When you are ready, you will be able to break that habit. Keep the faith, and I believe you will be able to quit and stop worrying about your health. Also, nonsmokers: quit hurling snotty comments at smokers. They are already hurting, and making evaluations about their rights as people simply because they smoke is rather cruel. Who among us really can say they are perfect? Maybe you don't smoke, but you may overeat or drink or swear or kick the cat, etc. Don't hate the person. Hate the habit.
