I have taught aerobics and kickboxing and have been in the health and fitness circle since 1994 and have heard many questions concerning the proper way to start and succeed in losing weight with the protein diet. First of all, let's get the facts straight: ketosis is what happens to your body when you have too much protein, not enough carbs. You DO NOT want ketosis to occur. You will know when ketosis occurs when you start having horrible, irreversible bad breath (halitosis). Ketosis occurs when the body produces ketones, a toxic chemical substance that can lead to liver problems as well as storage of "hard fat" due to the mass quantities of unused proteins.

Also, too much protein stores as fat, believe it or not. Carbohydrates are a natural energy source. For proper brain function, a person MUST HAVE at least 50 grams of carbs. The best thing to do is to have complex carbs in the morning for breakfast, such as oatmeal...and go ahead, have your piece of fruit, fructose is a simple carbohydrate, but it is not processed, so it is okay, and recommended that you get some fruit in your diet. For a snack, have a banana with some all-natural peanut butter. Lunch, have grilled chicken with a leafy-green vegetable and 1/2 cup of brown rice (lower Glycemic Index than white or refined rice). After lunch, THEN start to curb your carbs. Have a protein shake or a handful of mixed nuts for an afternoon snack. Then for dinner, your carbs should only be coming from leafy green veggies. These do not store as fat, they do not even digest b/c of the fiber content, they just aid in digestion.

If you can eat every 3-4 hours, this will allow your metabolism to keep burning throughout the day. To diet down, I eat 5 small (<300 calories per meal) meals. If you eat these small meals throughout the day, it will eliminate the urge to pig-out in the evening, when your body is winding down. This works along with cardio exercise in the morning and strength training in the afternoon.

I hope this helps you out! Eat more (often) to lose more weight!
