You can flex the abs in so many ways, both voluntarily and involuntarily. Laughing hard flexes them, rotating your torso side to side flexes them, sitiing up out of bed even flexes them! There is a whole abdominal wall that is worked, and no matter what the controversy states, you work this whole wall of muscle, there are no "upper and lower" abs. Try lying down flat and bringing your knees to your chest, this is a great way to "flex" them. If you walk around all day with them flexed, they will be worked, and it helps your posture.
