I recently turned 30 and am severely overweight. I have had gastrointestinal problems as well as joint pain due to my eating habits and weight. My GI Dr. put me on a diet that was really simple to follow: STAY AWAY FROM THE FIVE WHITES!!! 1. SUGAR 2. FAT 3. FLOUR 4. POTATOS 5. RICE This is not the atkins diet - atkins says stay away from most vegetables and all fruits and eat alot of fat and red meat. My Dr. told me to eat alot of vegetables - and the brighter the color - the better they are for you! Specifically red and green bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, brocolli, squash, asparagus, leaf lettuce and tomatos. Eat as much as you want whenever you want! And fruit should be eaten 2-3 servings a day. And avoid red meat and pork - so I only eat chicken and turkey, again 2-3 servings per day. He also told me that nothing is better for you than fish and seafood. I really enjoy salman and tuna as well as shrimp and crab legs. I don't drink soda except for the occasional DIET soda - I mostly drink water and sugar free koolaid. If I must sweeten something - I only use Splenda brand sweetener. It has no aftertaste and you would never know it wasn't real sugar. I also enjoy (within reason) all kinds of Russell Stover sugar free and low carb candies. They taste like regular candy and cure my craving! EXCERCISE- 3-5 times a week at least! My doctor told me that the best machine is called a transporter. It's kinda like a stepper but it glides rather than climbs. It is much better for your knees and hips. 30 minutes at a time is enough. I also do weight lifting, but more of a low-weight/high-rep routine. I am not looking to be muscular - just toned. I have lost 40 lbs in 4 months. And that was over Thanksgiving and Christmas time! What else do I need to say? If you want to chat or have any questions, please feel free to email me anytime! Diets always work better with a friend and confidant! Happy dieting and good luck!! Karen |
